What Counts as a Coastal Escape?
To me, a coastal escape is anywhere the sea is close and the pace slows down. That could mean a fishing village in Portugal, a beachy town in Costa Rica, or a bikeable coastal city like Almería or Porto.

Planning a Coastal Escape (Slow Travel Tips)
Here’s how I plan most of my coastal trips:
- Avoid August (in Europe) unless you’re okay with crowds
- Mix city + coast (e.g. Barcelona + Cadaqués)
- Stay near ferry ports or coastal trains — makes day trips easy
- Book a place with a view or a balcony — trust me
- Always pack a windbreaker and something for rain

What to Pack for a Coastal Escape
Whether you’re traveling to a cliffside town in Italy or a ferry-accessible island in Greece, coastal trips have their own rhythm — and packing list.
I usually bring:
- A windbreaker or light jacket (even in summer)
- Waterproof bag or dry sack for beach/ferry days
- Comfy shoes for walking on cobblestones, trails, or piers
- A light towel and reef-safe sunscreen
- Offline map (especially for smaller ferry towns with bad signal)
Optional but often helpful: motion sickness tablets (for ferries) and a little cash — some ferry terminals and beach cafes are still cash-only.
