Coastal Spain regions, explained
The Spanish coast runs from the warm Mediterranean in the south and east across to the wild Atlantic, then up north to the dramatic green shores of the Basque Country, Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia. Spain’s coasts have five main regions plus two island groups, and each one has a completely different personality, climate and season.

Coastal Spain FAQs
Which is the best coast in Spain?
There isn’t one, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something. Costa Brava for coves and walking, Costa de la Luz for wild Atlantic beaches, the north for green scenery and summer, and the Canaries for winter sun.
When is the sea warm enough to swim?
Mediterranean: roughly June to October. Atlantic north: July to September, and even then it’s bracing. Canaries: year round.
Do I need a car?
For the Costa Brava coves and the northern coast, yes. Along the Costa del Sol and near Barcelona and Valencia, the trains and buses are good enough to skip it.
Where’s warm in Spain in winter?
Only the Canaries are reliably warm enough to swim. On the mainland the Costa del Sol and Almería are the mildest, but that’s jumper weather, not beach weather.
How long do I need?
Seven days for one region. Spain is much bigger than people plan for. Trying to combine north and south in a week means spending most of it in the car.
