5 Best Beaches Near Palma Mallorca: No Car Needed

Let’s be honest: when you think of a “city beach,” you usually picture crowded, murky water you wouldn’t want to dip a toe in.

Palma de Mallorca is the exception, but only if you know exactly where to go. You don’t need a rental car to find clear water here.

After five trips to the island, and swimming at every spot on this list.. I can tell you that the best beaches near Palma Mallorca are a simple €2 bus ride away.

But they all serve a different purpose, and arriving at the wrong one at the wrong time will ruin your day.

If you are still weighing whether you need wheels for the rest of your trip, read my honest breakdown of what renting a car in Mallorca really costs
and when it actually pays off.

And if you need a place to stay, read my guide on where to stay in Mallorca to find the best base for your trip.

How to Get Around (The €2 Bus System)

Ditch the expensive rental car keys. The €2 EMT local city bus is the smartest way to hop between Palma’s coastal spots.

Every beach in this article runs on the same simple system, and it is genuinely one of the best setups for transit-accessible beaches anywhere on the island.

  • The Cost: EMT city buses cost €2 a ride.
  • How to Pay: Tap on with a contactless card.
  • The Routes: Buses 3 and 4 cover everything west of the center.

Check live departures and current fares on the official EMT Palma site, because frequencies drop noticeably outside summer. Having data the moment you land to check the live EMT app saved me twice.

An Airalo eSIM installed before the flight means you can check departures while everyone else is still queuing for SIM cards.

Pro Tip: For lifeguard seasons and current water quality flags, use the official Balearic beach portal. It is the only source I actually check.

The Best Beaches Near Palma Mallorca

Cala Major: The Closest to the City

The Essentials:

  • 🚌 Getting there: Bus 4 from Plaça de la Reina (15 mins).
  • 🌊 The Vibe: Sheltered bay, calm water, great for first-timers.
  • ⚠️ The Catch: The sand is completely full by noon.

As the closest proper beach to the capital, Cala Major serves up beautifully sheltered swimming waters just 15 minutes away from the center.

Cala Major is the closest proper beach to the city, and honestly it is better than a beach 15 minutes from a capital has any right to be.

Bus 4 from Plaça de la Reina drops you almost on the sand, and the bay is sheltered enough that the water stays calm on days when Playa de Palma is choppy. The catch is space.

In September the sand was full by noon, so arriving before 10:30 is the difference between front row and squeezing in behind the sunbed rows.

If lying on sand gets old fast, the kayak trips that leave from this side of the bay were the best few hours of my September visit. The paddle along the coast towards Illetes runs about €35 to €45 per person. And it suits anyone who wants to see the coves you cannot reach on foot without committing to a full boat day.

Illetes: The Clearest Water

The Essentials:

  • 🚌 Getting there: Bus 3 to the end of the line (25 mins).
  • 🐠 The Vibe: The best water clarity and snorkeling near the city.
  • ⚠️ The Catch: Tiny cove; absolutely packed by 11 am.
A woman in a white swimsuit wading in the crystal-clear turquoise water of Illetes cove beach surrounded by rocks in Mallorca.
The water clarity at Illetes is unmatched this close to the city, but you’ll need to arrive early to claim a spot on the sand.

Illetes is where I send anyone whose main question is “where is the water actually good?”

Bus 3 ends right there, about 25 minutes from the centre, and the cove has the clearest water of any beach this close to the city. On a still morning you can watch fish around your ankles. It is also tiny.

By 11am in season there is no free sand left, and I mean none, so this is an early beach or a late afternoon beach, not a turn-up-at-one beach.

Are the beach clubs in Palma de Mallorca worth it?

The best beach clubs in Palma de Mallorca cluster around this stretch, with the Illetes clubs built into the rocks and Puro Beach out on its own point near Cala Estància.

I’d say they are worth it exactly once, on a day when the free sand is full and you want a guaranteed lounger and a long lunch. On a normal day I would rather keep the money for dinner in the old town.

Portixol & Ciudad Jardí: The Local Favorites

The Essentials:

  • 🚶 Getting there: A flat, 20-minute walk from the cathedral.
  • The Vibe: Morning swims off the platforms followed by marina coffee.
  • 👨‍👩‍👧 The Catch: Small sand patches, but great for avoiding tourists.

These are the beaches nobody puts on a postcard, but they ended up being my favorite part of basing myself in the city.

A woman holding a straw sun hat walks along the paved coastal promenade right next to the rocky swimming bays of Portixol beach near Palma.
Portixol is just a flat, scenic 20-minute walk from the cathedral. Perfect for a quick morning swim followed by a harbor-side coffee.

Portixol is an easy walk along the seafront. The sand patch itself is small. The real draw is swimming off the platforms and getting coffee at the marina afterward. That is exactly what the locals do, all year round.

Just a few minutes further along the promenade is Ciudad Jardí. The water here stays shallow for a surprisingly long way out, making it the calmest beach on this list and the obvious pick for small kids.

Gentle ocean waves lapping the quiet shoreline of Playa Ciudad Jardi featuring a wooden lifeguard tower and distant hills in Mallorca.
The calm, shallow waters at Ciudad Jardí make it a favorite for local families and anyone looking to avoid heavy tourist crowds.

On weekends, it is mostly Mallorcan families. If quiet is the whole point, go here on a weekday morning when the families are at school and work. Cala Estància, just past Portixol, is another great, sheltered option that rarely sees coach-trip crowds.

Playa de Palma: Space and Facilities

The Essentials:

  • 🚌 Getting there: Bus or a 15-minute taxi.
  • 🏖️ The Vibe: 4.5 km of continuous sand, facilities every 100 meters.
  • ✈️ The Catch: The Can Pastilla end sits directly under the airport flight path.
An elevated view of the wide sandy shoreline and promenade at Playa de Palma, lined with palm trees during a golden sunset in Mallorca.
Playa de Palma offers kilometers of wide, open sand and lively promenades, making it perfect for full beach days with plenty of space.

Playa de Palma is massive, so even in August, the crowds spread out in a way the small coves never allow. It is the beach I’d pick for a full, lazy day. The honest downside? You will hear every landing at the Can Pastilla end. It is fine for a swim, but not what I’d choose for a purely peaceful day.

Which Beach Should You Choose?

All of these beaches are easy to reach from Palma’s city centre, but each has a different atmosphere.

🏖️ Cala Major

  • Getting there: Bus 4 (around 15 min)
  • Best for: First-time visitors & sheltered swimming
  • Watch out for: Sand gets crowded by noon

🐠 Illetes

  • Getting there: Bus 3 (about 25 min)
  • Best for: Crystal-clear water & snorkelling
  • Watch out for: Small beach fills up before 11 am

☕ Portixol

  • Getting there: 20-minute waterfront walk
  • Best for: Morning swims & cafés by the marina
  • Watch out for: Small sandy area

👨‍👩‍👧 Ciudad Jardí

  • Getting there: Seafront promenade or local bus
  • Best for: Families & shallow water
  • Watch out for: Busy with local families on weekends

🌊 Playa de Palma

  • Getting there: Bus or 15-minute taxi
  • Best for: Full beach days & plenty of space
  • Watch out for: Aircraft noise near Can Pastilla

Beaches Near the Cruise Port & Airport

Near the Cruise Port: If your ship gives you six hours in Palma, Cala Major is the answer. It is roughly 10 minutes by taxi from the terminal, making beach time plus an old town walk genuinely doable.

Check exactly where your ship ties up on Ports de Balears. If your berth is on the city side, Portixol works beautifully since you can walk the whole way along the water.

Near the Airport: The best beaches near Palma airport are Can Pastilla and the western end of Playa de Palma. They are close enough that a swim before a 9 pm flight is completely realistic (I was rinsed off and at the terminal in under 25 minutes).

If you land late or leave early, a prebooked driver costs only a little more than a taxi and waits if your flight slips.

What I’d Do Differently Next Time

The thing nobody told me before my first trip is that Palma’s beaches reward mornings the way almost nothing else on the island does.

On my September visit, I wasted my first beach day arriving at Illetes at midday, standing at the edge of the cove holding my towel like an idiot before getting back on the bus.

The next morning, I swam at Portixol at 8:30 am with maybe six other people, then had coffee at the marina while still in my swimsuit.

If I did the trip again, I would flip every beach day: swim first, explore the city second. It is a completely different experience for zero extra money.

My Verdict: The Best Beach in Palma

Crystal-clear shallow water at Illetes cove revealing rippled sandy bottom, framed by pine-topped rocky headlands
You can watch small fish dart around the submerged rocks at ankle depth, the water is so transparent it almost looks like glass laid over sand. Take Bus 3 from Palma, get off at the last stop, and come early before the sun hits directly overhead and other visitors arrive.

If I have to name one, it is Illetes at 9 am, and it is not close. The water is the reason you came to an island.

But I’ll be straight with you: Palma’s beaches are about convenience. Once you want the pristine water Mallorca is actually famous for, the quiet coves I mapped across the island are worth the extra effort.

Go to the city beaches because they are €2 and 20 minutes away, not because they are the island’s finest, and you will come home happy.

FAQs About Palma Beaches

Are the beaches near Palma actually good, or just convenient?

They are genuinely good for city beaches, and better than what you’d find beside most Mediterranean capitals. They are convenient first and beautiful second. Knowing that before you go is what stops you from being disappointed.

How far are the beaches from Palma city center?

A woman standing in front of the illuminated Gothic facade of La Seu cathedral reflected in the still waters of Parc de la Mar at sunset in Palma de Mallorca.
La Seu at golden hour is one of those moments that makes Palma feel completely worth it as a first base. The old town, the waterfront, the cathedral. All of it walkable, all of it this good. It’s why I keep recommending Palma to first timers over anywhere else on the island.

Everything on this list sits within about 8 km of the cathedral, which is unusually tight for an island this size. They are close enough that I never fully “planned” a beach day. I just went when the weather looked right and was in the water within 30 minutes.

Can you still swim near Palma in October?

Yes, and it might be my favorite month for it. The sea holds around 23°C (73°F) into early October, the sunbed rows start disappearing, and you get the locals-only version of Portixol that summer visitors never see.

Is Playa de Palma too touristy?

The Arenal end, yes. That stretch is a party resort with a beach attached, and I would not send anyone there for a relaxed day. The trick is that 4.5 km is long enough to contain completely different beaches, so pick your entry point wisely.

Cala Major or Illetes, if I only have time for one?

Illetes for the swim, Cala Major for the full day. Illetes wins on water but punishes you on space, while Cala Major gives you room to actually stay past lunch.

Should I spend my one free day on a beach or driving?

If you have already had a couple of beach mornings, drive. The west coast road that starts just outside Palma is the single best day out on the island, and no city beach competes with what you will see from it.
